As a fiddler, composer, and community builder Hayden Stern (fiddle, guitar, vocals) has taken Seattle’s roots music scene by storm. Stern draws freely from multiple traditions, expanding his original base of Scottish fiddling to Irish, Scandinavian, French-Canadian, Appalachian, and beyond. His debut album, The Morning Dark, focuses on composing tunes himself, bringing his roving ear and keen focus on arranging to a live performance built to rouse everyone to dance. Coming originally from Santa Cruz, California’s rich roots music scene, Stern grew up attending Scottish fiddle camps, immersing himself in tradition at an early age. Shortly after arriving in Seattle, he discovered contra dancing, and with it a new community of like-minded LGBTQ musicians and dancers. He’s been captivating listening rooms and dancefloors across the US ever since, including festival stages such as the Bellingham Celtic Festival and Corvallis Celtic Festival.
As The Hayden Stern Band, he is joined by powerhouse musicians Molly Tucker (fiddle, viola, vocals) and Ezra Jane Landsman (guitar, vocals). Together, they play a mix of traditional repertoire and original compositions to celebrate the release of Hayden’s debut album, The Morning Dark.
